Note: This was written in response to a claim sometimes made in regards to choices about sexuality. If people see orthodontists to straighten crooked teeth and eye doctors to correct impaired vision, why should someone not also seek to have surgery to alter one's sexual identity on a physical level to match one's internal sense of sexual identity for those struggling with gender dysphoria?
To be clear, as 1 Corinthians 5:12-13 says, "what have I to do with judging outsiders?" Everyone is free to do as they wish. Those outside of Christ will not consider themselves bound to The Bible and thus wouldn't be following it anyway. While of course I think they should, first I think they should get saved by Jesus as they won't be able to fully understand or adhere to His Word otherwise anyway. There is of course much more that could be said on this but this is my concise summary of some of what The Bible says on this. This is an attempt at a Biblical view of the subject and why I believe it's best to accept the sexual identity God has given us rather than fight it.
..............................................................................
A trans person 18 and over is free to do as he or she wishes with his or her body, in regards to body modification via reassignment surgery.
I don't think a child should be allowed to make such a life-altering decision as a child is still mentally developing and may have a change of feelings down the road.
In regards to the common rejoinder mentioned earlier here, I would say this. God did not make anyone with bad vision or crooked teeth. When God saw His creation on the 6th. day, He said it was very good. (Genesis 1:26-31)
Ecclesiastes 7:29 says that God made man to be perfect but man has gone off in search of many schemes.
When man sinned and rebelled against God, the whole was cursed with sin and subjected to futility, as Romans 8 explains. (See also Genesis 3.) This is when bad vision and crooked teeth and other ailments started cropping up. I believe this is also where proclivities toward forbidden sexual relations came up as well. (It's important to note here that being born with a particularity proclivity for a particular sin is of course beyond any person's control. Temptation itself is not sin; acting upon it is though.)
For the other example, if God made someone a brunette, then that person is a brunette. Dying hair to make it blonde does not make that person a blonde. Eventually the dye wears off and the natural roots will grow back out.
The same is true with transgenderism. A person can change outer and inner genitalia and hormone levels but this doesn't change who that person is ultimately. The chromosomes are still the same. Their identity doesn't change in God's eyes.
That said, I don't think it's wrong to dye hair (though I have no desire to do so, particularly because I believe I should be happy with what God has given me in hair color. That is something God gives me. The moral weight of changing sex is quite different from changing hair color, as I don't think there is any for that.) Fixing bad vision and bad teeth is an attempt to temporarily address products of the fall that will one day permanently be fixed with a new body in Heaven for all those in Christ.
The distinction with transgenderism is that God has forbidden sexual relations with the same sex. (Romans 1 is a particularly good passage for this but note also Jesus' words in Matthew 19.) A transgender person engaging in sexual relations with his or her birth sex after transition would thus be violating the command against homosexual relations.
And in Deuteronomy 22:5, The Bible also forbids cross-dressing. Thus, it would follow that a transgender person wearing clothing of the opposite sex, even after having had transitional surgery, would still be violating this command.
This is simply not God's design and trying to rebel against it simply continues to subject transgender people to futility. Note what God says in Romans 9:20-24. Does He not have the right as Creator to make His creation as He sees fit? The clay can't tell the potter that it doesn't like the design- the clay has no say in the matter.
2 Corinthians 4:7 says we have this treasure- that each person made in God's image is- in jars of clay. The surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. Jesus says we can find rest for our souls in Him. (Matthew 11:28) Ultimately, He is the One we can and should take our dsyphorias in life to so we can have that rest in trusting our lives to the hands of our loving Creator.
In the end, when we are saved through faith in Jesus' death and Resurrection, we'll find the restoration and satisfaction we desire through Him in Heaven. Until we get to Heaven, He helps us along the way here in the far country in dealing with these groanings. There is a day coming when all shall be well eternally and that's what I look forward to in the midst of this present suffering, knowing that the weight of glory coming far outweighs anything I go through here.
(For further reading, I found this article from "Christianity Today" extremely helpful and gracious in talking about and understanding a Christian response to this topic.

(See Exodus 20:25 NLT for the origin of the blog title.) "My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for The King; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer." (Psalms 45:1) [If the last part of that verse is true for me, it's only because of Jesus in me. He's my only good. I am nothing without Him. He must increase and I must decrease.] "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." (Psalms 19:14)

God's Love (song)
(Note: Another favourite from the archives. It's always a good day to praise The Lord! Psalms 118:24)
And now for something we hope You’ll really like! These next two posts are love songs to God- to the God of my life who fills my life with His life and makes life worth living! And it’s all through God’s Love shown to us in Jesus. Praise God for His love!

Softer than a sigh
My God is deeper than the deepest ocean Wider than the sky
My God is brighter than the brightest star That shines every night above
And there is nothing in this world
That can ever change my God!
Something happened to my heart the day that I met You
Something that I never felt before
You are always in my life no matter what I do
And every day I see that I want You, Lord
My God is warmer than the warmest sunshine
Softer than a sigh
My God is deeper than the deepest ocean Wider than the sky

And there is nothing in this world

Look On Up
I just had an observation today. It's not meant as an indictment against anyone who enjoys watching television and movies, etc. (particularly since this is coming from someone who LOVES watching a ton of [albeit usually older ;-)] television shows and movies). It just is funny to me how branded properties become verbs over time- as in the way that one can now apparently "Google" something (and/or "Wikipedia" something- though one does not seem to too often "Yahoo" or "Bing" something, much less "Encyclopedia Brittanica" something or "various reputable print book, magazine and professional journal sources" something). [1 Thessalonians 5:21-22....but that's a separate post in itself.] And particularly the way that one apparently can now "Netflix" something. This reference works if one actually has Netflix access and/or is aware of how it works.
Since I currently do not have television access whatsoever, I can definitely say that I haven't missed it. Yes, there are a very select few things I might like to watch- but nothing I can't do without. I was wondering though, why Netflix releases an entire season's worth of shows on one day. I suppose there is some convenience to that and it doesn't necessarily follow that one will or should or must watch them all in one day. (Though some may enjoy such marathons- again, I understand that and I've done some limited television marathons myself.) I guess I'm just saying that I find it a bit disturbing when people speak of terms like "binge watching". It seems there are very few things we should binge on- if anything, why not binge on God's Word and His creation?
Let me reiterate that I say all this as one who struggles with this myself- I'm not perfect or always good at this either. There is a certain pleasure and comfort in getting lost in such bouts of entertainment. But I want to make sure that I'm not so tied to the things of the world that I lose sight of the things of God.
"The stuff of earth competes for the allegiance I owe only to the Giver of all good things."- Rich Mullins in "If I Stand".
May my heart always be attuned to the only Giver of all good things' heart- and seek Him above anything else. A man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions- or in the abundance of his time watching televisions. (Luke 12:13-21) Let's be rich toward God always first- before laying up any treasure for ourselves on earth....some treasure is okay- but as I like to misquote .38 Special- "Hold on loosely to earthly gold- if you cling too tightly- you're gonna lose your soul. First, baby- seek kingdom of Jesus- and all that you need will be given."
:-)
Teach me to count the days aright, Lord, so that I may get a heart of wisdom. (Psalms 90:12)
Before I get lost again in the impermanence of the finite, let me remember the infinite and work for that imperishable crown....May my tongue stick like peanut butter to the roof of my mouth if I forget Jerusalem and don't make her my highest joy....The joy of The Lord is my strength. I as your spiritual Gomer to Your spiritual Hosea- keep drawing me back from my whoredoms and let me feast once more on your flesh and blood, as a spiritual cannibal vampire might (even though I know that's a contradiction in terms
;-)). Thank You for Your love and sacrifice and New Life that grants me real life and life more abundant.
Help me and us all to keep looking to You above all- make You our highest joy- and Look on Up.

A Dusting of Stargazing
I'm a bit late for All Saints' Day, but I had been thinking on this earlier and thought it fit well. Evolutionary theory says that we are stardust- that we are literally made of the atoms of exploding stars through the Big Bang and evolution. I've seen this explained in movies where it's made to sound all cosmic and romantic because the sense of eternity that we associate with stars, which can last for so many ages. It's like a touch of The Divine, you could say. And The Bible says that's halfway right. The Divine has made us with eternity in our hearts. (Ecclesiastes 3:11) We are made to be eternal beings. We are made of dust alright- but it's dust from the ground, not the stars. (Genesis 2 explains that God made Adam from the dust of the ground and then made Eve from one of his ribs.) The Bible mentions this a couple of times. Psalms 103:14, in detailing the depth of God's compassion, explains that He remembers how we are formed, that we are but dust. From ashes to ashes and from dust to dust- we are made from the dust and to the dust we will return. (Genesis 3:19 and Ecclesiastes 3:20)
Another passage talks about this, but I think it's one that gets buried in the midst of a super famous chapter about the Resurrection of Jesus and the resurrection of the dead.

1 Corinthians 15:35-49
English Standard Version (ESV)
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Resurrection Body
35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.
42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”;[a] the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46 But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall[b] also bear the image of the man of heaven.
The evolutionary theory ascribes a divine composition to our bodies without acknowledging The Divine Being Who "infused us with holy". (To briefly quote Chris Rice's "The Final Move") It is true in that sense that we are made of the Bright Morning Star of Heaven (Revelation 22:16). He made us in His image. He is the only reason we can take wonder at our bodies and our creation. The glory is reflected in us the created but it reflects back to The Creator! When we marvel at the beauty of the moon's shimmering brightness at night, in one sense we are marveling at the moon, but ultimately we're marveling at the source of the moon's light- the sun. In the same way, when we marvel at humanity because we are "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalms 139:13-14), we are really marvelling at the source of our wonderfully made bodies- The Son.
Psalms 8 asks God, "What is man that You care for him?" We are but dust, yet God made us a little lower than the angels. In our search for wonder and meaning in that wonder, we must wonder as we wander about the wonder around us and within us and it should lead us to the One Whose Name is Wonderful Counselor and Mighty God.
And when we realize we are not as strong as we think we are (that's a Rich Mullins reference), we can acknowledge our need for The God Who created the cosmos and everything in it. He's the only One Who can bring new life to dying stars and planets. He Himself came from Heaven to die to pay for all sins. And because the Eternal One of Heaven rose, we know we will also rise in Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:14) Our faith in Him assures us of our place with Him. And then we become complete in Him- our frail forms of dust from the ground are transformed into Morning Stardust instead as we take our place beside The Ancient of Days in the heavens- in Heaven- forever.
:-)
Praise God for His amazing love that fills us with wonder every time. Romans 5:8 is forever wondrous to me- Jesus, You are the Wonder and Mystery I seek to behold. May I ever be captivated by Your awesomeness too great for words.

Good Friday (It Is Done) (song)
I'm posting this on "Black Friday", the day after Thanksgiving in America and the day that is so named because many businesses are in the black due to what's essentially the kick-off to the Christmas shopping season. I thought it'd be appropriate to post a song about the blackest Friday of all- when Jesus Christ died a cruel, torturous death for undeserving sinners like you and me. It's also interesting that God finished all His creating work on a Friday and saw that it was good. And just like businesses get out of the red and into good standing in the black on Black Friday, because of the red blood of Jesus, we can get into good standing with God through our faith in what He accomplished in the blackness of death and the light of Resurrection! For that, we can always give thanksgiving. God finished the work needing to be done on this Friday as well, as Jesus testified. And as Isaiah 53:10 tells us, it pleased The Lord to crush His Son for our sake- but He didn't leave Him in the grave, but rose Him up again. Our sins are forgiven through Jesus when we put faith in Him. He is the cure for all our evils. He's in love with us and He proved it on Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Resurrection Sunday! It's good to know that the work is completed- it is done.

Christ's there ere Day One, you dudes
Choose this day Whom you will serve
Yahweh or the highway, buster
Christ's The Way- I'm with God
Sunday- God split light and dark
Monday, Tuesday- water, earth, plants
Wednesday- the sun, moon and stars
Fish Thursday- birds above
Next day God creates
All sundry beasts and man in His image
On Friday- then rest Saturday
Sin got there and cursed all that
Calvary- God already countered that
13:8 Rev., Gen. 3- check that!
On Friday- God is done!
Sunday- Jesus crushed his head
Lucifer's end- Hell burning
But Friday- he bruised Your heel- Christ said
On Friday- "It is done!"
Saturday- grave
But Sunday's Resurrection Day
Good Friday- yes, sir- what a name!
(We) messed up God's design
It's a wonder we're alive
You see, He chooses to spare our lives
(We) could be in Hell now
And just writhing in flames bound
Eternally gnashing teeth
(For) sin, His grace abounds!
All was lost with one bite
Sin gushed- 3 Genesis plight
The tree they ate left us riddled with this blight
Eat from Christ's tree to get it off
And drink of His blood
Good Friday
-Read 6 John!
Christ rides in Palm Sunday- cool!
Palms wave- praise- folks change their tune
Friday- they don't care about You
Crucified Son of God
Sunday- tomb saw You depart
Truth, Life, The Way- saved my heart
Sin's stains- Blood washes them out
Good Friday- it is done!
Ohh! Whoa!

"The Light Has Dawned" (song)
Note: This is the third of three blog posts that are entries that I submitted for my church's Art Exhibit earlier this year and they were first originally published August 5, 2015 in the commemorative booklet detailing all the artists' work. :-) The theme was God's creation.
“The Light Has Dawned”
(parody of “I Write The Songs” by Bruce Johnston, as performed by Barry Manilow; copyright by Nathan Ludwick 7/13/2015)
(Genesis 1-3, Genesis 3:15, Genesis 18:17, Romans 5:12-21, Malachi 4:2, Psalms 16:10-11, 1 Corinthians 15:35-58, Romans 10:1-17, Isaiah 9:1-2, Luke 1:76-79, Colossians 1:9-20, Ephesians 1 [especially v. 10], John 1:1-18, Job 38-41, Psalms 65, Psalms 77:11-14, Psalms 89:5-18, Psalms 121:1-2, Revelation 13:8, Revelation 21-22)
He’s been alive forever
And He spoke the very first words
He put the world and the Heavenlies together
In Genesis- it’s right in 1:1
He made the earth and Heavens in beginning
And without God nothing was ever made
1:3 in John; He made Heaven and earth
It’s right in Psalms- 121
Day one- light’s first agenda
The dark’s night and light’s day; uno, dos
Second day- sort out waters and sky
God spoke again- made land and seas- son buenos!
Moving right along- He made plants- all day 3!
Made lights called sun and moon and stars to sing
4th. day was done; God made birds and fish- day 5
Literal ones or millennia
And on day 6, beasts on (the) land
And in His image, God makes us- man
And He gave us plants for food; earth to subdue
Finished work of art
And it’s all real good- How great Thou art!
It’s for me, it’s for you- it’s from God- what a treat!
It’s a world of creativity!
In six days long, God made the whole world- see?
He rested on day 7- made it holy
He made it good- we made it go awry
And all along, God knew we’d fall
He sent His Son through Abe- the world’s blessing
The Son was slain before the world’s founding
16:10 Psalms- Won’t let The Son just die
Son’s rise means all can get right with God
He is Jesus and He rights all wrongs!
Man! This may be a low blow, but there is some
legitimacy to parody as an art form, I think. (Just ask Elijah in 1 Kings 18 or
God Himself throughout Exodus when He sent plagues to parody, in a sense, the
pagan gods of Egypt. ;-)) Before you bury your head into your hands in a groan,
let me direct you to the One who really writes the songs and everything else
good- Jesus Christ.

Wedding Reception
We really do live in a wonderful
world full of so much life and beauty everywhere. The masterful Creator God has
dressed the daffodils with dainty skirts and poured a vividly bright array of
colors over the birds of the air. The planets, stars, moons, comets, meteors-
even black holes- and all the other inhabitants of the cosmos shimmer with the
incandescent light of His glory. “The heavens declare the glory of God.” (as
Psalms 19:1 tells us.)
And out of all of God’s wondrous creations- the majestic mountains, the sandy shining shores on the beaches, the tremendous trees of the forests, the truly amazing animals of the world- who does God make “a little lower than the angels”? (Psalms 8). The clay Playdough figurine and Lego lady were given the breath of life and the flesh combined to make living, human beings, male and female- both made in the image of God. (Genesis 1:27) And while God pronounces all His creations good, on the sixth day, He surveys His creative output and declares it very good. (Genesis 1:31)
What is man that You should care for him, Lord? Though we’ve done nothing to make ourselves worthy of such extravagant love, You choose to bestow it upon us anyway- and You give it, not in spades, but in hearts. (Psalms 8; Ezekiel 36:26) And were one to compile the number of the grains of sand on those beautiful Caribbean ports in a pile with the Pacific islands’ stores of sands and all the other beaches of the world- the number would still fall far, far, far less than the number of Your thoughts for me- and for every individual individual who has ever or will ever exist. This is a thought too wonderful for me to comprehend- but then, Your thoughts and ways are infinitely higher than mine. (Psalms 139; Isaiah 55:8-9). Yet, You have given me the mind of Christ- which is available to all believers in and followers of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16).
And You have made all things beautiful in Your time. (Ecclesiastes 3:11) And though You made us to be upright, we have gone off in search of many schemes. (Ecclesiastes 7:29) Poison pervaded Your Paradise on Earth, back when our founding father and mother were eating us out of house and home. The lowdown snake in the grass recoiled from his long fall to earth and struck in vengeance with a forked tongue that only gave half the story, if that. But of course, half-truths are still whole lies. Yet even before You had put forth Your words and commanded the nothingness to transform itself into something- You had all these things planned and You already had the Sacrifice for our salvation said and done before anyone else had said and done anything. (Genesis 1-3; Revelation 13:8)
Then, in the fullness of time, The Divine took on our image and face; Your Greatest Gift encased in flesh- and we beheld His glory. The paradoxical mystery of Grace and humility that ever confounds the wise and learned- The King of Kings became the Suffering Servant. Love marked Your path down a straight and narrow road- the Via Dolorosa- the way of suffering that ended in a crossroads at the side of the highway. You created the off-ramp from the broad way of destruction so that we might cross from death to life by crossing the bridge You made. Though You submitted to its ghastly reign for three days and our punishment You took as Your own for our peace, The Love stronger than death arose again victorious forever. The curse is reversed, the poison cured, and death itself and its minions all eternally defeated. (John 1:1-14, Galatians 4:4, Philippians 2:1-11, Song of Solomon 8:6-7)
Though beset with trial, troubles and tribulations, the tried, tested and true path of righteousness is available to all the poor, beleaguered pilgrims- the rotten, ragged ragamuffins who dare to admit their own poverty and meekly accept Your gift that comes through faith. The path may vary in its length for each traveler, but never varies in its route- a Spirit-led journey assured of its celestial end. Though we are hapless fools who doubt, question, berate and betray You before You gently return us to our senses, You remain forever faithful and remind us that You are the One who has always been moving our legs forward e’er since we first stepped on Your path with a willing heart of trust. And even that is Your gift- we boast of nothing but a Love that wilt not let us go. (John 15:5, Romans 11:29, Ephesians 2:8-10, 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, Jude 1:24-25)
And when at last the faith becomes sight when Your clarion call carries us to Your lovely dwelling place, whether at the last of days or the last of our days, we will bow in Your holy presence, amazed at Your beauty and stunned speechless at Your welcome arms that would even deign to allow us in the midst of Your perfection. But then we recognize the Everlasting Arms that have always held us and even now envelop us all at once, with each having an equal amount of Love embodied and personified, rocking us gently as a baby in a cradle. As we join with the living creatures and angels- cherubim and seraphim; all of ‘em- singing praise to our God who sits on the throne forever, Who alone holds salvation and is forever praised- the brilliance of colors we have never seen bedazzle but pale in comparison to the purest white all of eternity has ever witnessed. And a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language of which we are delighted to be in that number, in robes made white from the blood of The Lamb, wave palm branches before The Lord God- The Only King and forever sing Your praises. You alone are worthy, Lord. Mere feeble words fail miserably to describe the indescribable majesty of Your glory. Lord Jesus, You alone are God. You are King of Kings and Lord of Lords. We will forever sing Your praise. (Psalms 16:11, Psalms 84:10, Psalms 87, Colossians 1:10-23, Revelation 7:9-17, Revelation 21-22)
Help us to ever live it out now. (Matthew 5:14-16, Philippians 2:12-13, 1 Peter 2:9-12).
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then He said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ He said to me: ‘It is done. I am The Alpha and The Omega, The Beginning and The End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars- their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. “ (Revelation 21:1-9)
“The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.” (Revelation 22:17)
“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of The Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.” (Revelation 22:20-21)
